-Branches

A branch of a tree holds the leaves and is on the upper of the tree.A branch is a secondary wood limb growing from the trunk of a plant. It helps transport materials from the tree trunk to the leaves. The trunk is a massive primary stem of a tree located between the roots and upper tree canopy.

-Trunk

The trunk consists of five main parts: the bark, inner bark, cambium, sapwood, and heartwood.n botany, the trunk (or bole) is the stem and main wooden axis of a tree, which is an important feature in tree identification, and which often differs markedly from the bottom of the trunk to the top, depending on the species

-Leaves:

Leaves have different parts on like the blade so the edge of the leaf is named the lamina.

-Roots

Roots provide a variety of support to the tree so keeping the tree up and it keeps in one spot.roots grow from the bottom and starts to spread out under ground so the tree can swing in any direction but the roots have spreaded so it’s strong enough to hold the tree because it strongly grew underground.

-Growth rings:

Growth ring, in a cross section of the stem of a woody plant, the increment of wood added during a single growth period. In temperate regions the growth period is usually one year, in which case the growth ring may be called an annual ring.

-Bark:

The bark is on the outside of the tree so the really rough bit of the tree.Bark is normally used on playgrounds, etc.

How does a tree become timber:

The trees are usually cut into smaller lengths on-site and then picked up by a timber lorry, which transports the timber to a processing site, such as a sawmill, paper mill, pallet, fencing. The machine used to cut the cut the branches off the tree is named the harvester

Describe and explain the different types of cut?( eg quarter sawn)

Quarter sawing gets its name from the fact that the log is first quartered lengthwise, resulting in wedges with a right angle ending at approximately the center of the original log. Each quarter is then cut separately by tipping it up on its point and sawing boards.Plain sawn, also commonly called flat sawn, is the most common lumber you will find. This is the most inexpensive way to manufacture logs into lumber. Plain sawn lumber is the most common type of cut.Rift sawn. sawn lumber is typically narrow with a very straight grain pattern on the face of the board. Rift sawn lumber is usually used with oak to avoid the flecks that are common in the species.

Give an example of defects in timber?

  • Wind cracks.

  • Shakes.

  • Twisted fibers.

  • Upsets.

  • Rind galls.

  • Burls.

  • Water stain.

  • Chemical stain.

Give examples of timber used in NZ?

  2. Hello Adelaide, I love your blog post, it is very intresting and full of information. You have briefly explained different meanings about parts of a tree. I also like the pictures you have put in, the pictures make it look very good because the picture goes with the information that you have put in. For next time maybe you could put in a link on where you got the information. Good job Adelaide.
